Hasta la Vista

Today is the final full day of our long journey across Costa Rica. Our sun-weary students made their way to the buses this morning with bags full of sand and memories to last them a lifetime. Today was spent winding our way back to San Jose with stops for souvenirs in the town of Sarchi, known for its artisans and beautifully painted wagons. 





Tonight we will spend some time at the hotel's pool sharing stories before heading to bed early. Two of our three flights have very early wake-up calls and the third will make us all jealous by sleeping in and spending a morning at the pool. 

 
This being my fourth trip to Costa Rica, I must say that the students were absolutely wonderful the entire trip. We received constant compliments from our guides and hotels (no small feat for 80+ middle schoolers) and there were very few times when students arrived anywhere late. They can now consider themselves seasoned world travelers and I sincerely hope this is a habit they continue! Thank you, parents, for making this adventure possible for our students and a HUGE thanks to our mature, flexible, curios, respectful, young ambassadors who made this journey such a joy! If you happen to see a chaperone over the next couple weeks, please make sure to thank them for giving up their precious vacation time to travel with our kiddos.

Coffee Tour and Volcán Arenal

Our first full day in Costa Rica required several hours of bus time, but our students had a blast with breaks touring a coffee plantation and hiking the base of a volcano. The students were excellent ambassadors at the coffee plantation and purchased as much as they learned (a ton). While hiking to the volcano, the wildlife viewing was far better than I've seen in past years and I believe this was largely due to our students' maturity and respect for the setting. I couldn't be more proud. I'm posting from my phone now so I will post some more impressive pictures later, but here are some snapshots of our fun-filled day...     Tomorrow is our "water day" as we plan to kayak, hike to a GORGEOUS waterfall, and enjoy several hours at the hot springs. If today wasn't enough, our students will certainly be worn out by tomorrow evening!

Water Day

As expected, today was a wet, fun experience for our students. After a mercifully late breakfast time (8am), our whole group made their way to kayak on Lake Arenal. Under the watchful eyes of our guides, our group ventured across the lake in pairs to a protected cove where they immediately jumped out of their kayaks to swim... and helped de-kayak anyone too slow to put themselves in the water. Although our paddle began in a chilly rain, the sun quickly forced its way through the clouds and gave us a great view of the volcano (seen below). With sore arms, we then made our way to La Fortuna, one of the most incredible waterfalls you will find. The granite walls and towering trees frame the falls and gave our students an unforgettable setting to swim and chase fish. Our students were so impressed with the view and refreshing swim, they hardly complained about the 500 stair climb back to the bus!
